Hi writing family, Kelly Eden here.
This month The Medium Writers Challenge is running with $50,000 in prizes. While the contest is running I thought it’d be a good opportunity for us to focus on personal essays.
Regardless of whether or not you enter the contest, personal essays are a great tool to have in your writer’s belt.
Most of us will write a personal essay at some point in our careers. In the last few years, they’ve made up the majority of my commissioned work with online magazines.
Last week, we talked about writing with objects.
According to Writer and teacher John Maguire, objects are the key to good writing.
So, write about things you can drop on your foot!
One important ways to learn to write better personal essays is to read them.
Here are 6 I’ve gathered up for you.
If you want to learn more, my Personal Essay Course is also open— the lessons are short so you can fly through AND get feedback on your contest entry draft.
Have fun writing!
Kelly
