A little writing encouragement for the holidays
And an exciting pre-released book on Creative Nonfiction!
Writing jobs are quiet this month—have you noticed?
Lauren Wolfe of Chills on Substack says:
“Because that’s journalism today. Even after decades of experience, people like me are still scrounging. On top of that, we’re at the mercy of editors who may or may not reply for days or weeks.”
If you’re feeling discouraged, thinking it’s just you finding it hard, don’t.
It’s not just you.
This is writing. This is the nature of the beast.
We’re all scrounging.
December is a good time to try something new or publish on Medium.
That’s what I’ve been doing this week and my story went viral yesterday!
You can read it here if you’ve been wondering what I’ve been up to this year
Here’s the friend link if you’re not a Medium member
Or write a short fiction story ready for next year’s contests.
Take a writing course
or just take a break and catch up on your reading.
And there’s always Substack and LinkedIn to publish on, too, when the writing gigs are thin.
At minimum, it will keep you using your writing skills (which always improve with use.)
Also, one of my favorite creative nonfiction writers Lee Gutkind has pre-released his latest book and I’m EXCITED about it!
Gutkind was a huge force in making Creative Nonfiction a thing.
“Creative nonfiction—true stories enriched by relevant ideas, insights, and intimacies—offered liberation to writers, allowing them to push their work in freewheeling directions. The genre also opened doors to outsiders—doctors, lawyers, construction workers—who felt they had stories to tell about their lives and experiences.”
Here’s the link to The Fine Art of Literary Fist Fighting if you’re excited too. (Not an affiliate. Just a cool book!)
Happy holidays and Merry Christmas! (Meri Kerihimete as we say in New Zealand).
I hope you have a wonderful, creative festive season.
