Today I read my old academic papers to my daughter. I was showing her the difference between writing for the public and writing academically.
I’ve spent the past 13 years popularizing academic knowledge for magazines and online.
But many of us who have an academic or “expert” background find it a struggle to popularize our writing and ideas.
Is popularizing just dumbing it down? Some people think so.
I disagree for two reasons:
Good information shouldn’t be locked up in Universities.
Curious readers of any background deserve access to knowledge.
Popularizing what we know is one of the biggest gifts we can give.
Do you struggle with taking what you know and making it easy to read? What’s your professional/academic background? Let me know in the comments.
P.S. November will be our next Medium Mentoring Program. If you want to check it out here’s the link. I’m limiting numbers so get on the waitlist ASAP.
