I have a ton of writing gigs pop into my inbox daily and lately, soooo many have been for personal essays.
Including one I’m quite excited about: The New York Times are wanting personal essays again!
Medium are boosting personal stories left and right.
And, as usual, Insider can’t get enough of them.
Personal essays are just ONE tool in your writing toolbox. They go in and out of fashion, but they’re an important skill to have and can be not only rewarding to write personally, but also financially.
But…here’s the kicker
They’re not as easy as just writing down an anecdote about your life.
It’s not “Kelly’s Wednesday Diary Entry” that editors and readers want.
Me: Can I tell you about my day?
Editor: Hmm, no thanks.
A lovely writer called Shari just finished myIntroduction to Personal Essays course last week and sent me an email after taking up the feedback option at the end of the course:
“Thank you once again for your amazing support! I am so grateful for your course that truly helped me in writing the essay today. You are a phenomenal editor and writing coach! As I grow as a writer, the insights you have provided for my beginning on Medium as I shared have been pivotal in helping me grow.”
It’s always nice to hear that something you made helps people.
That’s why I created my two courses and why we write personal essays!
Our writing, we hope, helps people.
If you want to learn the difference between a good personal essay and a bad diary entry, it’s here to check out anytime.
